WP2: Phenotyping local breeds

Objectives

The goal of WP2 is to provide phenotypic information on local breeds, both in routine and in challenging conditions (temperature and feed resource).

The objectives of WP2 are:

  • Propose and validate a locally applicable methodology (including protocols to evaluate responses to challenge) and durable data (to further re-use and share).
  • Identify and organize existing data (literature, previous works) to characterize lifetime trajectories of local breeds in terms of phenotypic time-series (e.g. BW) and life history traits (e.g. age at first reproduction, lifespan)
  • Contribute to the development of animal models (WP4) representative of local Mediterranean breeds, combined with the biological mechanisms studied in WP1.
  • Collecting the individual data at animal level in parallel with the data collected at the farming system and herd levels in WP3 (in particular environmental fluctuations) to interpret potential trade-offs observed in phenotypic data.
